Koi need a large, filtered pond and live for decades. Kawarimono are judged on individual appeal, so quality is harder to compare.

What makes a good Kawarimono?

Clean skin, a strong body and good color for its variety. Each fish is judged on its own merits.

Are Chagoi really friendly?

Yes. They are known for being calm and often the first to feed from a hand, which can help tame a pond.

What should I check before buying, and should I quarantine?

Ask whether the fish was tested or quarantined for koi herpesvirus (KHV). Quarantine new koi for at least three to four weeks at warm temperatures before adding to a pond.
