A miniature sighthound kept as a companion since Roman times, the Italian Greyhound is elegant, gentle and loves warmth and laps. It still has a sighthound's chase drive, and its slender legs break more easily than those of most breeds.

Is an Italian Greyhound a good first dog?
It can be, for a patient adult household. IGs are affectionate and quiet, but housetraining is slow, and young dogs need protecting from falls and rough play.
What health problems do Italian Greyhounds have, and what should be tested?
Leg fractures, dental disease, PRA, epilepsy, luxating kneecaps and autoimmune disease occur. Ask for a patella check, a recent eye exam, a thyroid panel and a Legg-Perthes clearance on both parents.
Are Italian Greyhounds good with children?
Gentle older children, yes. Toddlers risk injuring them, since IG legs are fine-boned and break easily.
