It can be, for an active first-time owner. Setters are friendly and gentle but energetic and easily distracted, so training needs patience and short, fun sessions.
What health problems do Irish Setters have, and what should be tested?
Hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, hypothyroidism, eye disease and megaesophagus occur. Ask for OFA hips, elbows and thyroid, a recent eye exam, and DNA results for rcd1-PRA and CLAD on both parents.
Are Irish Setters good with children?
Usually, yes. They are sociable and playful, but a young Setter's size and energy can knock over small children. Supervise and train calm greetings early.
