A hybrid dwarf is a cross between a Campbell's dwarf and a Winter White, and many pet dwarf hamsters are hybrids whether labeled or not. Hybrids can be healthy pets, but the cross carries a higher risk of diabetes and inherited problems.

Should I breed hybrid dwarfs?
No. Responsible breeders keep the two species apart because hybrid lines are linked to diabetes and birthing problems. Buy a hybrid as a pet only.
What health checks should I ask for?
Ask for the birth date, vet-confirmed sex and a litter record. Check that the rear end is clean and dry: wet tail, a fast bowel infection, strikes young hamsters stressed by weaning or moving, and needs a vet the same day. A vet exam on file is a plus.
Can I keep a hamster where I live?
In most of the United States, yes, but Hawaii prohibits hamsters. Rules vary and can change, so confirm your state and local law before you buy.
