Huacaya and Suri cross
Alpaca · Fiber · 0 live listings
A huacaya and suri cross is an alpaca bred from one parent of each fleece type. The fleece can come out like either parent or somewhere in between, so each cross is judged on the fleece it actually grows, not on its parents.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
A mixed fleece may suit neither show class, and breeders debate crossing the types at all. As a pet or companion a cross needs the same company, shearing and heat care as any alpaca.
Common questions
Can a cross be registered?
Check the current ARI rules for cross-type animals before you buy for breeding. Either way, DNA parentage is what confirms the named sire and dam.
Is a cross a good pet?
Yes, in a group. Alpacas are herd animals and must never be kept alone, so buy at least two. Geldings make the easiest pets; bottle-raised intact males can develop berserk male syndrome and turn aggressive toward people.
What health records should an alpaca have?
Ask for a negative BVD test, since a persistently infected cria sheds the virus for life, plus the herd's TB and Johne's status and a current CD&T. Where white-tailed deer roam, ask about the meningeal worm plan. ARI registration with DNA parentage confirms the pedigree.
What health tests should a Huacaya and Suri cross have?
Ask for Veterinary exam on file, BVD negative, CD&T current, DNA parentage verified, ARI registration on file and Microchip registered.
