Huacaya alpacas grow a dense, crimpy fleece that stands out from the body and gives them their teddy-bear look. Most alpacas are huacayas, bred in the Andes for soft fiber, and they need yearly shearing and the company of other alpacas.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
Alpacas are herd animals and must never live alone, so plan on at least two or three. Dense fleece means yearly shearing and a real heat-stress risk in humid summers.
Common questions
How many should I buy?
At least two, and three is better. Alpacas are herd animals and must never be kept alone; a lone alpaca is stressed and can decline. Geldings make easy fiber pets, and males and females are kept apart unless you are breeding.
What is berserk male syndrome?
A bottle-raised or over-handled intact male can come to treat people as rivals and turn aggressive as he matures, charging, biting and knocking people down. Gelding does not reliably fix it once it starts. Ask how any young male was raised.
What health records should an alpaca have?
Ask for a negative BVD test, since a persistently infected cria sheds the virus for life, plus the herd's TB and Johne's status and a current CD&T. Where white-tailed deer roam, ask about the meningeal worm plan. ARI registration with DNA parentage confirms the pedigree.
Ask the seller for these. Documents on Everybarn are on file for your own checks; we don't check them with the issuer.
