Is a German Wirehaired Pointer a good first dog?
Rarely. GWPs are trainable but independent and very energetic, and they need consistent handling and early socialization. Hunters and very active households do best.
What health problems do GWPs have, and what should be tested?
Hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disease, heart disease and von Willebrand disease type II are the main concerns. Ask for OFA hips and elbows, a cardiac exam, a recent eye exam and a vWD type II DNA result on both parents.
How is it different from the German Shorthaired Pointer?
Both are German versatile hunters. The Wirehair has a harsh, weatherproof coat and beard, and tends to be more reserved with strangers and more protective of its home.
