Agouti
Gerbil · 0 live listings
The agouti, or golden agouti, is the wild-type Mongolian gerbil: sandy brown with ticked fur, a pale belly and dark eyes. It is curious, rarely bites and is easy to keep, and like every gerbil it needs a same-sex companion and deep bedding to dig in.

The tradeoffs, honestly
Gerbils chew through plastic and need deep, dusty-free bedding to dig, so a wire-topped tank beats a pet-store cage. Adults are hard to introduce, so buy a pair raised together.
Common questions
Should I get one gerbil or two?
Two of the same sex, raised together. Gerbils are social, but adults are territorial and hard to introduce, so buying a bonded pair avoids fights.
What health checks should a gerbil have?
Ask whether the line has a history of seizures: many gerbils have stress-triggered epilepsy, and some lines are more prone. Check the tail is whole (never lift a gerbil by it, as the skin can slip off), and ask for vet-confirmed sex and a litter record.
Are gerbils legal everywhere?
No. Gerbils are prohibited in California and Hawaii because escaped animals could establish wild populations. Rules vary, so check state and city law before you buy.
