Standard (top-eared)
Rat · 0 live listings
The standard, or top-eared, fancy rat is the domestic Norway rat with ears set on top of the head and a smooth, short coat. It is clever, affectionate and easy to handle, and like every rat it needs at least one same-sex companion and daily time out.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
Rats live only two to three years, and respiratory disease and tumours are common. They need daily attention and a companion, so a single rat in a small cage is a poor life.
Common questions
Does ear type change temperament?
No. Standard and dumbo rats differ only in ear placement. Temperament comes from the line and from early handling, so ask how the babies were socialized.
What health checks should I ask about?
Ask about respiratory health in the line: nearly all rats carry mycoplasma, so sneezing, clicking breaths or porphyrin (red) staining are red flags. Ask about tumours in older relatives, request vet-confirmed sex and a litter record, and find an exotics vet before you bring rats home.
How many rats should I get?
At least two of the same sex, ideally littermates. Rats are highly social and become bored and stressed alone. Bucks are larger and lazier; does are smaller and more active.
