Satin
Rat · 0 live listings
Satin rats carry a recessive gene that gives the coat a glossy, reflective sheen from thinner, clearer hair shafts. It is a coat type only, so a satin needs the same companion, daily time out and care as any fancy rat.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
A satin coat can look thinner, especially in bucks and older rats. Short lifespans, respiratory disease and tumours apply as with any rat.
Common questions
Does a satin coat need special care?
No. Satin is a coat texture only. Keep bedding clean and dust-free and the shine takes care of itself.
What health checks should I ask about?
Ask about respiratory health in the line: nearly all rats carry mycoplasma, so sneezing, clicking breaths or porphyrin (red) staining are red flags. Ask about tumours in older relatives, request vet-confirmed sex and a litter record, and find an exotics vet before you bring rats home.
How many rats should I get?
At least two of the same sex, ideally littermates. Rats are highly social and become bored and stressed alone.
