Rex
Rat · 0 live listings
Rex rats carry a dominant gene that makes the coat curly and coarse and the whiskers short and crinkled. Care is the same as any fancy rat, though the curly coat can thin with age and molting, so expect some patchiness over time.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
A rex coat looks best when young and often thins or goes patchy with age. Short lifespans, respiratory disease and tumours apply as with any rat.
Common questions
Is a rex the same as a double rex?
No. A rex has one copy of the rex gene and a full curly coat. A double rex has two copies and a patchy, sparse coat. Ask for the parents' coat types.
What health checks should I ask about?
Ask about respiratory health in the line: nearly all rats carry mycoplasma, so sneezing, clicking breaths or porphyrin (red) staining are red flags. Ask about tumours in older relatives, request vet-confirmed sex and a litter record, and find an exotics vet before you bring rats home.
Do rex rats need grooming?
No special grooming. The coat may thin or shed in patches, which is normal for rex, but bald patches with scabs or scratching mean mites and a vet visit.
