A European Burmese needs company for most of the day. The breed has higher rates of diabetes and carries inherited hypokalaemia and a facial pain syndrome.
Common questions
What health tests should the parents have?
Ask for a DNA result for hypokalaemia (low potassium) and GM2 gangliosidosis on both parents. Keep adults lean, as diabetes is more common in the breed, and ask about any feline orofacial pain syndrome in the line.
How is it different from the American Burmese?
Different registries, different type. European Burmese are less rounded and come in more colors. They are not associated with the head defect seen in some American lines.
Can a European Burmese be left alone?
Not for long. It is one of the most people-focused breeds. Two cats together or a home with someone around most of the day is the better fit.
