Is an English Setter a good first dog?
Often, yes. They are gentle, friendly and calmer indoors than many gun dogs. They need daily exercise and patient training, since harsh handling makes them shut down.
What health problems do English Setters have, and what should be tested?
Hip and elbow dysplasia, congenital deafness and hypothyroidism are the main concerns. Ask for OFA hips and elbows, a BAER hearing test and a thyroid panel on both parents, and a BAER test on the puppy.
What is the difference between show and field English Setters?
Show-bred dogs are larger, with more coat and a calmer manner. Field-bred dogs, often called Llewellins, are smaller, leaner and much higher in drive. Choose the line that fits your life.
