A Mau is sensitive to noise and change and can be shy with strangers. It needs daily active play, and the gene pool is small, so fewer breeders and longer waits.

Common questions

What health tests should the parents have?

Ask for a DNA result for pyruvate kinase deficiency on both parents, which is known in the breed, and heart screening for HCM. Ask too about any history of urinary problems.

Is an Egyptian Mau good for a busy household?

It depends. Maus bond deeply but dislike chaos and strangers. A calm, active home suits them better than one with frequent visitors and noise.

Are the spots natural?

Yes. The Mau is one of the few naturally spotted domestic breeds, not a hybrid. The spots show on the coat and on the skin underneath.
