Dumeril's monitor is a Southeast Asian forest monitor; hatchlings have striking orange-banded heads that fade to brown with age. It is shyer and less often captive-bred than most monitors, and imports can arrive stressed.

The tradeoffs, honestly

A large, humid enclosure and a varied diet are required, and shy imports can be slow to settle. Hatchling colour fades as it grows.

Common questions

Captive-bred or imported?

Many Dumeril's are imports. Prefer captive-bred with a hatch record; for an import, ask for a vet exam, clear fecal and a PIT tag number, and check for mites and a full tail base.

Will the orange head last?

No. The bright hatchling banding fades to a more muted brown adult colour.

Is it legal where I live?

Monitors are CITES Appendix II, so an import needs CITES paperwork. Florida prohibits Nile monitors and regulates others, and Hawaii bars most non-native reptiles. Check your state and city rules first.
