Dumbo
Rat · 0 live listings
Dumbo rats carry a recessive gene that sets the ears low and round on the sides of the head. It is a look, not a different animal: a dumbo needs the same companion, daily time out and care as any fancy rat.

The tradeoffs, honestly
Dumbos are sometimes sold as calmer, but temperament comes from the line and handling, not the ears. Short lifespans, respiratory disease and tumours apply as with any rat.
Common questions
Are dumbo rats calmer?
Not because of their ears. Dumbo is a single recessive gene that changes ear placement only. Choose on the temperament of the parents and how the litter was handled.
What health checks should I ask about?
Ask about respiratory health in the line: nearly all rats carry mycoplasma, so sneezing, clicking breaths or porphyrin (red) staining are red flags. Ask about tumours in older relatives, request vet-confirmed sex and a litter record, and find an exotics vet before you bring rats home.
Will two dumbos have dumbo babies?
Yes. Because dumbo is recessive, two dumbos produce all dumbo babies. A top-eared rat may still carry the gene hidden.
