Dominiques are considered America's oldest chicken breed, kept on farms since colonial times. They have barred feathers and a rose comb, and are hardy, calm dual-purpose birds that lay well and forage.

The tradeoffs, honestly
Dominiques are smaller than many dual-purpose breeds, so meat yield is modest.
Common questions
How are Dominiques different from Barred Rocks?
Dominiques have a rose comb and are smaller. Barred Rocks have a single comb and are larger.
What health checks should chicks or pullets have?
Ask whether chicks were vaccinated for Marek's disease at hatch and whether the flock is NPIP-certified, which covers pullorum-typhoid and usually avian influenza. Look for clear eyes, clean vents and quiet breathing, and quarantine new birds for 30 days.
Are Dominiques rare?
They are a heritage breed tracked by The Livestock Conservancy.
