Delawares were developed in Delaware in 1940 as a fast-growing meat bird, white with black barring on the neck and tail. They are calm, dual-purpose chickens and good layers, and are now kept as a heritage breed.

Ask whether chicks were vaccinated for Marek's disease at hatch and whether the flock is NPIP-certified, which covers pullorum-typhoid and usually avian influenza. Look for clear eyes, clean vents and quiet breathing, and quarantine new birds for 30 days.
