Pied
Degu · 0 live listings
Pied degus have white patches over an agouti, blue or sandy base, so every animal is marked differently. It is a pattern only, so a pied needs the same group, sugar-free diet, dust baths and chew-proof metal cage as any degu.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
Pied is one of the rarer degu varieties, and markings cannot be predicted from the parents. Care, the diabetes risk and the long lifespan match any degu.
Common questions
Will pied parents produce pied babies?
Not reliably, and the amount of white varies from baby to baby. Buy the individual you see, and ask about the health of the line.
What health checks should a degu have?
Degus are prone to diabetes, so ask what the line is fed and avoid any animal raised on fruit, treats or molassed mixes. Check for bright orange, even front teeth, clear eyes and a whole tail, and ask for vet-confirmed sex and a litter record.
Are degus legal where I live?
Check state and city law first, because rules vary. Degus are reportedly prohibited in California, Hawaii, Georgia, Alaska and Utah, and some local rules differ from state rules.
