Agouti
Degu · 0 live listings
The agouti degu is the wild-type color of a social, daytime rodent from central Chile, brown with a pale belly and a tufted tail. Degus are clever, chatty and long-lived, but they need a group, a sugar-free diet and a chew-proof metal cage.

The tradeoffs, honestly
Degus live five to eight years, chew through almost anything and cannot handle sugar. They are awake by day and need company of their own kind.
Common questions
How many degus should I keep?
At least two of the same sex, ideally raised together. Degus are highly social and a single degu kept alone often becomes stressed.
What health checks should a degu have?
Degus are prone to diabetes, so ask what the line is fed and avoid any animal raised on fruit, treats or molassed mixes. Check for bright orange, even front teeth, clear eyes and a whole tail, and ask for vet-confirmed sex and a litter record.
Are degus legal where I live?
Check state and city law first, because rules vary. Degus are reportedly prohibited in California, Hawaii, Georgia, Alaska and Utah, and some local rules differ from state rules.
