Zebra danios are small, striped schooling fish from the streams of South Asia, and one of the hardiest aquarium fish there is. They are fast, active and forgiving of beginner mistakes, and they do best in a group of six or more.

Danios are fast swimmers that need horizontal space, and in small groups they may nip slow, long-finned tankmates. They jump, so a lid is a good idea.

How many danios should I keep?
At least six. In a group they school and show natural behavior, and chasing spreads out among them instead of landing on other fish.
Are danios good for a new tank?
They are hardy, but no fish should go into an uncycled tank. Cycle the tank first, then add danios as one of the first groups.
What should I check before buying, and should I quarantine?
Look for active swimming, full bellies and clear fins without white spots. Quarantine new fish for two to four weeks, especially if adding to an established tank.
