Is a Shar-Pei a good first dog?
Rarely. Shar-Pei are clean and devoted but independent and wary of strangers and other dogs. They need early socialization and an owner ready for skin and ear care.
What health problems do Shar-Pei have, and what should be tested?
Shar-Pei autoinflammatory disease with recurring fevers, kidney amyloidosis, entropion, skin and ear infections and hypothyroidism are common. Ask for OFA hips, elbows and thyroid and a recent eye exam on both parents, and ask about fevers in the line.
Do Shar-Pei puppies need eyelid surgery?
Many do. Entropion is common, and puppies may need temporary eyelid tacking or later surgery. Ask the breeder how often it occurs in their litters.
