A toy breed that comes in two varieties: the Hairless, with silky hair on the head, tail and feet, and the Powderpuff, with a full soft coat. Affectionate, playful and devoted, the Crested wants to be with its person and does poorly left alone.

The tradeoffs, honestly
Hairless Cresteds need sunscreen, coats and skin care, and often have missing teeth. Powderpuffs need regular brushing. Both are clingy and prone to separation anxiety.

Is a Chinese Crested a good first dog?
Often, yes. Cresteds are gentle and affectionate and adapt well to apartments. Plan for skin or coat care and for company most of the day.
What health problems do Cresteds have, and what should be tested?
Primary lens luxation, PRA, luxating kneecaps, dry eye and dental problems occur. Ask for a patella check, a recent eye exam and DNA results for PLL and prcd-PRA on both parents.
Are Chinese Cresteds hypoallergenic?
The Hairless sheds little, but no dog is allergen-free, since allergens come from skin and saliva too. Meet the breed first.
