The Chinese hamster is a slender, rat-like hamster with a longer tail and a dark dorsal stripe, from northern China and Mongolia; it is not a true dwarf. It is often gentle once tamed, but local laws on the species vary more than for other hamsters.

The tradeoffs, honestly
Harder to find than other hamsters and restricted in some places. Females in particular can be territorial, so keep one per enclosure.
Common questions
Is a Chinese hamster legal where I live?
Check before you buy. Hawaii prohibits all hamsters, and some other states, including California, restrict Chinese hamsters specifically. Rules vary and change, so confirm state and local law first.
What health checks should I ask for?
Ask for the birth date, vet-confirmed sex and a litter record. Check that the rear end is clean and dry: wet tail, a fast bowel infection, strikes young hamsters stressed by weaning or moving, and needs a vet the same day. A vet exam on file is a plus.
How is it different from a dwarf?
It has a longer, slimmer body, a visible tail and a more climbing habit. It is calmer in the hand than most dwarfs.
