Cheviots are a small, hardy hill breed from the Cheviot Hills on the England and Scotland border. They have white faces with no wool on the face or legs, upright ears and a lively nature, and ewes lamb easily and mother well.

The tradeoffs, honestly
Cheviots are active and alert, so they can be harder to catch and need good fencing. Their fleece is springy and useful but less fine than specialty wool breeds.
Common questions
Are Cheviots good for cold climates?
Yes. They were bred on exposed hills and are known for hardiness and thrifty grazing. Lambs are vigorous at birth.
What health tests should they have?
Ask for OPP, CL and Johne's results for the flock, and check that each sheep carries official scrapie ID. Codon 171 scrapie genotype (RR is resistant) is worth asking for on breeding rams.
Cheviot or North Country Cheviot?
They are separate breeds. North Country Cheviots are larger and longer-bodied, while the smaller Cheviot is a compact hill sheep. Check which registry the animal belongs to.
