A robust, blue-grey cat from France with copper to orange eyes and a woolly, water-repellent coat. Chartreux are quiet, observant and loyal, often attaching to one person, and they rarely use their voice.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
A Chartreux sheds heavily each spring and matures slowly, often taking three to five years. It is rarer outside France, so expect a wait.
Common questions
What health checks should the parents have?
The breed is generally healthy. Ask for a check for patellar luxation, which is reported in the breed, and heart screening on the parents. A full vet exam of the kitten is the minimum.
Is a Chartreux good for an apartment?
Yes. They are quiet, calm and adapt well to indoor life. Give them toys to hunt, as they are keen mousers at heart.
How is it different from a Russian Blue or British Shorthair?
All three are blue. The Chartreux has copper or orange eyes, a woolly coat and a sturdy but less cobby body than the British. The Russian Blue has green eyes and a finer build.
