The Irian Jaya carpet python comes from southern New Guinea and is usually a slimmer carpet with a variable gray, tan or olive pattern. It is a medium-sized, arboreal python kept much like a jungle or coastal carpet.

Like all carpets it needs a tall enclosure and patient handling while young. Some New Guinea carpets have been imported, so confirm captive breeding.

Captive-bred or imported?
Choose captive-bred. Imported snakes are more likely to carry parasites and to refuse frozen-thawed food. Carpet pythons are CITES Appendix II, so an import should have its permits on file.
How does it compare with a jungle carpet?
It is usually slimmer and less high-contrast, with care that is much the same: a tall enclosure, perches, a warm basking area and frozen-thawed rodents.
Which health tests matter for a carpet python?
Ask for negative IBD and nidovirus PCR results, a clear fecal and a feeding log on frozen-thawed rodents. A hatch record with the parents, and a PIT tag or microchip number where used, ties the snake to its paperwork.
