One of the oldest Scottish working terriers, bred on the Isle of Skye to hunt foxes and vermin among piles of stones called cairns. Cheerful, curious and sturdy, the Cairn is a small, hardy dog with plenty of terrier independence and a love of digging.

Is a Cairn Terrier a good first dog?
Often, yes. Cairns are sturdy, friendly and adaptable, and a good size for most homes. Expect terrier traits: digging, barking and a mind of their own.
What health problems do Cairns have, and what should be tested?
Luxating kneecaps, ocular melanosis, liver shunt and globoid cell leukodystrophy occur. Ask for a patella check, a recent eye exam and a DNA result for globoid cell leukodystrophy on both parents.
Do Cairn Terriers shed?
Lightly. Weekly brushing and hand-stripping a couple of times a year keep the harsh coat healthy. Clipping is easier but softens the coat.
