Is a Bullmastiff a good first dog?
Sometimes, for a calm, confident owner who commits to early training. Bullmastiffs are affectionate and easy to live with indoors, but an untrained adult is too strong for many people to control.
What health problems do Bullmastiffs have, and what should be tested?
Hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat, cancer such as lymphoma, heart disease, entropion and hypothyroidism are the main concerns. Ask for OFA hips, elbows, cardiac and thyroid, a recent eye exam and a PRA DNA result on both parents.
Do Bullmastiffs drool?
Yes, especially after drinking, eating or exercise. Keep a towel handy. Some dogs with tighter lips drool less, but plan for it.
