Black-throat monitor
Monitor Lizard · 0 live listings
The black-throat monitor is a large, heavy-bodied East African monitor that can reach five feet or more. Captive-bred black-throats are often tame with regular handling, but an adult is a powerful lizard that needs a room-sized enclosure.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
An adult needs a custom, room-sized enclosure and a keeper able to handle a strong lizard. Food and housing costs grow with it.
Common questions
How big will it get?
Expect four to six feet and a heavy body. Plan the adult enclosure before buying the hatchling, not after.
What health records should I ask for?
A hatch record showing it is captive-bred, a weight log and a PIT tag number if it has one. A vet exam and clear fecal are a good sign.
Is it legal where I live?
Monitors are CITES Appendix II, so an import needs CITES paperwork. Florida prohibits Nile monitors and regulates others, and Hawaii bars most non-native reptiles. Check your state and city rules first.
