Black gerbils carry the recessive non-agouti gene, giving a solid black coat, often with a few white spots on the chin or feet, and dark eyes. It is a color only, so a black gerbil needs the same pair, tank and deep bedding as any gerbil.

No. Color does not change temperament. Choose on the parents' temperament and how the litter was handled.
What health checks should a gerbil have?
Ask whether the line has a history of seizures: many gerbils have stress-triggered epilepsy, and some lines are more prone. Check the tail is whole (never lift a gerbil by it, as the skin can slip off), and ask for vet-confirmed sex and a litter record.
Are gerbils legal everywhere?
No. Gerbils are prohibited in California and Hawaii because escaped animals could establish wild populations. Rules vary, so check state and city law before you buy.
