Is a Belgian Tervuren a good first dog?
Rarely. Tervs are trainable and loving but intense and sensitive. They suit active owners who want a dog sports or working partner.
What health problems do Tervuren have, and what should be tested?
Epilepsy, hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disease, hypothyroidism and cancer occur. Ask for OFA hips, elbows and thyroid and a recent eye exam on both parents, and ask about seizures in the line.
How is a Tervuren different from a Malinois?
They are varieties of the same Belgian shepherd type, separated by coat. The Tervuren is long-coated and usually a bit softer in drive than the short-coated Malinois.
