At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
Beaucerons mature slowly, are protective and can be dominant with other dogs. They need hard daily exercise and consistent training.
Common questions
Is a Beauceron a good first dog?
No. Beaucerons are loyal and intelligent but powerful and strong-willed, and they need an experienced handler and early socialization.
What health problems do Beaucerons have, and what should be tested?
Hip dysplasia, bloat, heart disease and eye disease occur. Ask for OFA hips and elbows, a cardiac exam and a recent eye exam on both parents.
Why do Beaucerons have double dewclaws?
The breed standard calls for double dewclaws on the hind legs. They are part of the breed and should not be removed.
