Is a Basenji a good first dog?
Rarely. Basenjis are clean and affectionate but independent, mischievous and strong escape artists. They suit patient owners who enjoy outsmarting a clever dog.
What health problems do Basenjis have, and what should be tested?
Fanconi syndrome, a kidney disorder, is the main concern, along with PRA, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism and pyruvate kinase deficiency. Ask for DNA results for Fanconi syndrome and PK deficiency, a recent eye exam, OFA hips and a thyroid panel on both parents.
Do Basenjis really not bark?
They rarely bark, but they are not silent. Basenjis yodel, howl, whine and scream, especially when excited or left alone.
