Asian water monitor
Monitor Lizard · 0 live listings
The Asian water monitor is one of the largest lizards in the world, a semi-aquatic species from South and Southeast Asia that can pass six feet. It is intelligent and can become tractable, but an adult needs a room with a pool.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
An adult needs a room of its own with a pool large enough to swim in, and the strength of a big dog. Few keepers can house one for its whole life.
Common questions
How big does it really get?
Commonly five to eight feet, and heavy. Ask for photos of the parents and plan the adult enclosure first.
What health records should I ask for?
A hatch record showing captive breeding rather than import, a PIT tag number, a weight log, and ideally a vet exam with a clear fecal.
Is it legal where I live?
Monitors are CITES Appendix II, so an import needs CITES paperwork. Florida prohibits Nile monitors and regulates others, and Hawaii bars most non-native reptiles. Check your state and city rules first.
Ask the seller for these. Documents on Everybarn are on file for your own checks; we don't check them with the issuer.
