Apistogramma are dwarf cichlids from the rivers of South America, prized for bright colors and interesting behavior. They are small and suit planted tanks, but most need soft, clean water and caves for territory and breeding.

Many Apistogramma species need soft, acidic water and frequent water changes. Males are territorial, so give each fish its own space and caves.

Which Apistogramma is best for beginners?
A. cacatuoides and A. borellii are among the hardiest. They tolerate a wider range of water conditions than many others.
Should I keep a pair or a group?
A pair or one male with two or three females works well. Several males need a larger tank with plenty of territories.
What should I check before buying, and should I quarantine?
Look for full color, eager feeding and no white stringy feces. Quarantine new fish for two to four weeks and ask whether they are tank-bred or wild.
