Is an Anatolian Shepherd a good first dog?
No. Anatolians are calm and loyal but bred to make their own decisions. They suit rural owners with livestock or experience with guardian breeds, not first-time or apartment homes.
What health problems do Anatolians have, and what should be tested?
A fairly healthy breed. Hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism and entropion occur, and they can be sensitive to anesthesia. Ask for OFA hips and elbows on both parents, plus a thyroid panel if available.
Can an Anatolian be a family pet without livestock?
Some are, but the guarding instinct stays. Without a flock the dog guards its family and yard, so expect barking, suspicion of visitors and a need for secure fencing.
