It can be, for a committed owner who will train and socialize early. AmStaffs are loyal and affectionate but strong and sometimes dog-selective. Check housing and insurance rules before you buy.
What health problems do AmStaffs have, and what should be tested?
Hip and elbow dysplasia, skin allergies, hypothyroidism, heart disease and cerebellar ataxia. Ask for OFA hips and elbows, a cardiac exam, a thyroid panel and an NCL-A (ataxia) DNA result on both parents.
Is an AmStaff the same as a Pit Bull?
They share ancestry, but the AmStaff is an AKC breed with a written standard. "Pit Bull" is used loosely for several breeds and mixes. Registration papers confirm which you have.
