Is an American Pit Bull Terrier a good first dog?
It can be, for a committed owner who trains and manages well. APBTs are affectionate and eager to please, but strength and possible dog aggression make socialization and leash control essential.
What health problems do APBTs have, and what should be tested?
Hip dysplasia, skin allergies, heart disease, hypothyroidism and cerebellar ataxia occur. Ask for OFA hips and elbows, a cardiac exam and an NCL-A DNA result on both parents.
Are pit bulls legal everywhere?
No. Some cities, counties and countries ban or restrict pit bull types, and many landlords and insurers exclude them. Check local rules, your lease and your homeowner's policy before you commit.
