Is an American Bully a good first dog?
It can be, for a committed owner. Bullies are people-loving and eager to please, but strong. Socialization and leash training are essential, especially for larger sizes.
What health problems do American Bullies have, and what should be tested?
Hip and elbow dysplasia, breathing problems in heavily built lines, skin allergies, cherry eye and heart disease occur. Ask for OFA hips and elbows, a cardiac exam and an NCL-A DNA result on both parents.
Is an American Bully the same as a pit bull?
No. The Bully was developed from pit bull and AmStaff lines but is bred for a heavier build and companion temperament. Some laws and insurers still treat it as a pit bull type, so check local rules.
