American Bobtails mature slowly, taking two to three years to fill out. Tail length varies within litters, and the breed is less common, so finding a breeder can take time.

Is an American Bobtail a good first cat?
Yes. They are adaptable, tolerant of children and dogs, and handle change well. Their play drive is moderate, so daily games keep them content without much fuss.
What health checks should the parents have?
The breed is generally robust. Ask for a vet exam that checks the kitten’s spine and tail, heart screening on the parents, and any history of hip problems in the line.
Is the bobtail the same as the Manx gene?
No. The American Bobtail’s short tail comes from a different gene and is not linked to Manx syndrome. Tails range from a short stub to about half normal length.
