Amel
African Fat-tailed Gecko · 0 live listings
Amel, short for amelanistic, is a recessive African fat-tailed gecko morph that lacks black pigment, leaving tan, orange and pink tones. A visual amel needs two copies, and it combines with stripe and other genes into bright combos.

The tradeoffs, honestly
Het claims cannot be seen and rest on records. Some keepers give amels dimmer lighting since they lack dark pigment; care is otherwise the same as any fat-tail.
Common questions
What does het amel mean?
The gecko carries one amel copy but looks normal. Two hets produce about one visual amel in four on average. "Possible het" means it is not proven.
Is amel the same as albino?
Amel means lacking black pigment, which is what most keepers mean by albino in reptiles. In fat-tails, it is sold as amel.
What health test should I ask for?
Ask for a crypto test and a clear fecal on the colony, since crypto causes wasting with no reliable cure. A thick tail and clean toe sheds are good signs.
What health tests should an Amel african fat-tailed gecko have?
Ask for Fecal exam clear, Cryptosporidium PCR negative, Exotics vet exam on file, Genetics report for het claims, Hatch or birth record on file and Photo ID on file.
