Normal
African Fat-tailed Gecko · 0 live listings
The normal African fat-tailed gecko is the wild-type form: brown and tan bands on a calm, ground-dwelling gecko from West Africa. It is slower and shyer than a leopard gecko, needs a humid hide, and is the base for every morph in the hobby.
At a glance
The tradeoffs, honestly
Fat-tails eat only live insects and need a humid hide to shed cleanly. They can live 15 to 20 years or more.
Common questions
How is it different from a leopard gecko?
Fat-tails are calmer and slower, come from humid West African habitats and need a moist hide for shedding. Care is otherwise similar: belly heat, hides and dusted insects.
Captive-bred or imported?
Choose captive-bred. Wild-caught fat-tails often struggle to settle and feed. Captive-bred geckos come with a hatch date and feeding records, so ask for both.
What health test should I ask for?
Ask whether the colony has had a crypto test and a clear fecal. Cryptosporidium causes wasting in geckos and has no reliable cure. Look for a thick tail and clean shed on the toes.
What health tests should a Normal african fat-tailed gecko have?
Ask for Fecal exam clear, Cryptosporidium PCR negative, Exotics vet exam on file, Genetics report for het claims, Hatch or birth record on file and Photo ID on file.
