Is an Afghan Hound a good first dog?
Rarely. Afghans are loving with family but independent, sensitive and hard to train, and the coat is a real time commitment. They suit experienced owners with secure spaces.
What health problems do Afghans have, and what should be tested?
Hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, cataracts and laryngeal paralysis occur, and they can be sensitive to anesthesia. Ask for OFA hips, a thyroid panel and a recent eye exam on both parents.
Can the Afghan coat be kept short?
Yes. Many pet owners keep a shorter trim to reduce matting. It still needs regular brushing and bathing.
