The ackie, or spiny-tailed monitor, is a small Australian monitor sold in red and yellow forms. Australia does not export its wildlife, so ackies in the trade are captive-bred, and they are the most manageable size of monitor.

Small, but not a small-tank lizard: ackies need deep substrate to dig and a very hot basking spot. They are active and curious, which suits watchers more than lap pets.

Red or yellow ackie?
Both are ackies and kept the same way. Red ackies are more common in captivity; ask for parent photos if the form matters to you.
What should I check before buying?
Ask for a hatch record and a weight log. Look for a full tail base, bright eyes, clean vent and no kinks or swelling in the limbs, which can point to metabolic bone disease.
Is it legal where I live?
Monitors are CITES Appendix II, so an import needs CITES paperwork. Florida prohibits Nile monitors and regulates others, and Hawaii bars most non-native reptiles. Check your state and city rules first.
