The Rhode Island Red

Rhode Island Reds were developed in Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the 1800s as a hardy dual-purpose chicken. They are among the best brown-egg layers, and their toughness in heat and cold makes them a classic backyard starter.

The Buff Orpington

Buff Orpingtons were developed in Kent, England, in the 1890s by William Cook, and are a large, golden, fluffy dual-purpose chicken. They are famously gentle, lay well and go broody, which makes them a family favorite.

Buff Orpingtons go broody often, which stops egg laying for weeks. Their thick feathers make them struggle in hot, humid summers without shade.
