The Dorper

Dorpers were developed in South Africa by crossing Dorset Horn with Blackhead Persian sheep. They are hardy, fast-growing hair sheep that shed their coat, so there is no shearing, which makes them popular for meat flocks.

Some Dorpers do not shed cleanly and may need occasional shearing. They are less parasite-resistant than Katahdins in wet climates.

The Katahdin

Katahdins were developed in Maine in the 1950s as a hair sheep that sheds instead of needing shearing. They are hardy, parasite tolerant and easy lambing, which makes them one of the most popular breeds for new shepherds.

Katahdins are leaner and lighter-muscled than Suffolks or Dorpers. Parasite tolerance still needs management in wet climates.
