The Appaloosa
A spotted stock horse associated with the Nez Perce people of the Pacific Northwest. It is sturdy, sensible and versatile, and the gene behind its coat pattern also brings a much higher risk of an eye disease that can cause blindness.
Appaloosas are many times more likely than other breeds to develop equine recurrent uveitis, a painful, recurring eye disease. Fly masks and fast vet care for any eye problem are part of ownership.
The Paint
A stock-type horse with Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred bloodlines and a pinto coat. Underneath the color it is the same calm, athletic, cow-savvy horse, and it carries the same inherited disease risks plus one of its own.
White areas of skin sunburn easily and can develop skin problems. Frame overo carriers can produce a fatal lethal white foal if bred to another carrier, and stock-horse disease panels still apply.
