Buyer question
Is a Silkie guinea pig good for beginners?
Usually not: our Animal Library rates the Silkie guinea pig 2 out of 5 for beginners (coat care makes it harder).

The detail
The Silkie, called the Sheltie in Britain, is a long-haired guinea pig whose soft coat sweeps back from the head without a part, so the face stays clear. The coat is easier to see through than a Peruvian's but still needs daily brushing and trims.
- Best fit
- Patient owners, show
- Handling
- 4 out of 5 (Calm, rarely bites)
- Care load
- 5 out of 5 (Daily brushing, regular trims)
What to weigh
Long hair means daily brushing, trims around the rear, and bedding that does not tangle in the coat. Skipping it leads to mats, soiling and missed weight loss.
