The detail

Bred in Germany as a water retriever and later refined in France, the Poodle comes in Standard, Miniature and Toy sizes. All three are bright, athletic and low-shedding, and all need regular professional grooming and a job for their minds.

Temperament
Bright, proud, athletic
Best fit
Families, allergy homes
Trainability
5 out of 5 (Among the smartest)
Energy
4 out of 5 (Std: 1 hr; Toy: less)
Grooming load
5 out of 5 (Clip every 4–6 wks)

What to weigh

The coat never stops growing and mats quickly, so professional grooming every four to six weeks is a lifetime cost. Poodles are sensitive and can become anxious or noisy when bored or left alone too long.
